DISENYO 5: REIMAGINA! - A Runway Reinvented 17th Fashion Show

The halls of the Technological University of the Philippines – Integrated Research and Training Center (TUP-IRTC) came alive last Friday as it hosted DISENYO 5: REIMAGINA!, the 17th ANNUAL FASHION SHOW organized by the Bachelor of Technology in Apparel and Fashion Technology students under the Food and Apparel Technology Department of the College of Industrial Technology. This year’s event was more than a fashion showcase—it was a platform for innovation, sustainability, and cultural expression. From morning discussions to the dazzling runway presentations in the afternoon, the event embodied its theme: REIMAGINA!—challenging the norms of fashion and envisioning a more conscious and creative future. A Day of Inspiration and Innovation.  

The day began with the DISENYO TALK, a series of educational lectures led by key industry figures, providing students with essential insights into the evolving landscape of fashion and textiles: Ms. Evangeline Flor P. Manalang, Chief Science Research Specialist from the Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI), highlighted the importance and potential of Philippine Tropical Fabrics (PTF). Her presentation emphasized the environmental and cultural value of using indigenous fibers in modern design. Mr. Matthew “Chuck” Lazaro, Vice President of Asia Textile Mills, Inc., explored Emerging trends in textile manufacturing, encouraging students to embrace innovation and technological integration in the production process. Ms. Esme Palaganas, Co-founder of the Philippine Fashion Coalition, passionately advocated for Sustainability in the fashion industry, calling on the next generation of designers to prioritize eco-consciousness in their creative work. The collaboration between DOST-PTRI and TUP reinforced the shared vision of promoting sustainable, locally sourced materials.

The 17th Fashion Show: DISENYO 5: REIMAGINA! In the afternoon, the spotlight turned to the highly anticipated 17th Fashion Show, where third-year BT-AFT students debuted their original collections crafted from recycled and repurposed materials. These garments were not only innovative but deeply meaningful—paying tribute to Filipino culture, environmental advocacy, and the power of reinvention. Under the guidance of Prof. Annalyn N. Gebe, Prof. Merryl J. Florano, and Prof. Jonathan C. Domingo, as the event coordinators. students responded to the challenge of REIMAGINA! with garments that transformed waste into wearable statements, proving that fashion can be both bold and responsible. The event was made possible through the invaluable support of Prof. Bernadeth Gilbor, Head of the Food and Apparel Technology Department, and Dean Elpidio S. Virrey, dean of the College of Industrial Technology. A panel of esteemed judges lent their expertise, providing thoughtful critique and encouragement: Mr. Mike John Gutierrez – Fashion Designer, JAG, Ms. Jerlyn Matalubos – Sales Account Manager & Production Operation Overseer, Del’s Corporation; Ms. Rebecca Agnes Boncan – Fashion Designer and Dr. Reynaldo P. Ramos – President, Technological University of the Philippines.

Behind the scenes, the Junior Designers Club (JDC) managed the entire production—demonstrating exceptional organizational skills and creative direction to ensure a seamless and impactful experience for both participants and the audience. DISENYO 5: REIMAGINA! was more than a show—it was a movement. A redefinition of fashion through the lens of sustainability, innovation, and identity. As these young designers look to the future, one thing is certain: they are not just following trends—they are creating them.
