Library History

The Technological University of the Philippines Library System which consists of the libraries in the four campuses namely: Manila, Taguig, Cavite and Visayas, subscribes to the philosophy of cooperation and partnership. As such, and each member campus library shares and makes available its services and resources to the students, faculty and staff of other TUP Campuses.

The components of the Library System serve as the framework that provides assistance to TUP students and faculty in search of diverse of academic library collection, assistance to TUP students and faculty in search of diverse academic library collection, retrieve descriptive information, select materials and request these through inter-library loan.

The Technological University of the Philippines Library System started when the Curriculum Library was transferred to the Department of Military Science and Tactics in November, 1960. In 1966, the University of Tennessee through Dean Jose Vergara donated books.

In May 1971, Miss Esther Gutierrez was designated as Officer-In-Charge of the Curriculum Library. In 1972, Dr. Jose Vergara changed the name of the Library to College Library. The College Library was converted into University Library when it became Technological University of the Philippines (TUP) in 1978.

The University Library was transferred to the Teacher Education Building under Dr. Frederick SO. Pada on June, 1988, saw the creation of the Mini Library. In November, 1992, it became a centralized library with an area of 548.563 sq. meters and with a seating capacity of 220. The open shelf system was adopted and the Main Library was created merging the book collection of Architecture, Fine Arts and Graduate School. Also, there was a shifting from Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) to Library of Congress Classification System (LLC).

In 1993, air conditioning units and blowers were installed at the Main Library. September of that year, the University Library acquired a strong collection of books in Technology, Computer Science, Management, Arts and Pure Science.

Office Order No. 3385, s. 2001 was issued in compliance with COA's rules and regulations regarding collection of all library fees and collections paid to the Cashier's Office effective First Semester, SY 2001-2002.

Internet access was implemented in 2002 and vocational education books were donated by Director Romulo Mendoza. On June 5, 2003, Dr. Wilhelmina Gatmaitan-Borjal was designated as Director of Library and Learning Resources. June of that same year, the library automation system in the Main Library was adopted and in August, the University Library received books from Asia Book Foundation and Asian Development Bank.

January, 2004, the Integrated Library Computerization System started. On January 21, 2004, TUP Order NO. 08, s. 2003 was issued with the approval to charge ₱100.00 per visit to outside researchers and alumni of the University. A training of FOLLETT system on Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) for students and faculty by college and the IRTC personnel was held.

June, 2004, saw the completion of COE FOLLET Computerization of books and journals. In August, 2004, The TUP Library Handbook of Operations was drafted through the able leadership of Dr. Wilhelmina G. Borjal.

May 29-31, 2006, The First General Assembly of Librarians of the four campus libraries was held in TUP-Visayas. The integrated library system, program, service, personnel and book collection development was discussed.

In 2006, the first phase of computerization of TUP-Taguig Library was implemented. In September, 2006, TUP University Library joined the South Manila inter-institutional Consortium (SMI-IC). On June 13, 2007 Olga M. Ong was designated as the Officer-In-Charge of the University Library with the transfer of Dr. Borjal to the CIE. In that same year, membership to SMI-IC ceased.

June 1, 2008, Olga M. Ong became College Librarian IV and Marlyn C. Eustaquio was hired as College Librarian I. On March 31, 2010, the Library Committee was created and the Library System was activated again. A meeting was held at the Main Library. The Library Manual of Operations was revised.

On October 15, 2010, a meeting was held by the Library System at the Main Library to finalize the revision of the Library Manual of Operations. Also in September 2010, the first phase of the computerization of TUP- Cavite Library was implemented.
